Fbr Faces Pressure To Fix Income Tax Return System Ahead Of 2025 Filing Deadline

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has officially extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for the Tax Year 2025, moving it from September 30 to October 15, 2025. The announcement comes as a relief for taxpayers after repeated requests from trade bodies, Tax Bar Associations, and the public.

Earlier today, the FBR had maintained that the deadline would not be extended and warned late filers of penalties under the Income Tax Ordinance. However, the authority reversed its stance just hours before the cut-off, citing last-minute hurdles faced by taxpayers.

According to the circular issued under Section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance 2001, the decision provides additional time for individuals and businesses to file returns. So far, 4.1 million taxpayers have submitted returns, but the FBR has set an ambitious target of 10 million for the current fiscal year, compared to 7.6 million returns filed last year.

Tax experts say the extension was necessary due to system glitches and documentation delays. Business groups had even written to the Prime Minister requesting a general extension until December 31, 2025, though the government settled on a two-week relief. The FBR has urged taxpayers to use this opportunity to file on time and avoid penalties.
