The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is reportedly set to extend the income tax return filing deadline by another 15 days, moving it to October 31, 2025, according to official sources. The official notification is expected after 6 pm today.
Earlier, the FBR had maintained that September 30 would be the final deadline, warning taxpayers of penalties for late submissions. However, growing pressure from business associations and tax professionals has pushed the board to reconsider its stance.
A senior official revealed that the decision follows repeated calls from trade bodies such as the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FPCCI), which urged FBR to provide relief due to technical issues with the IRIS portal, document delays, and ERP integration problems.
Previously, the deadline was extended to October 15 under Section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, citing widespread system difficulties.
If the new extension is confirmed, it will provide much-needed relief to millions of taxpayers facing compliance challenges.
“The FBR is considering taxpayers’ genuine concerns and will take a decision that ensures maximum compliance,” said a senior FBR official.
This possible move highlights the ongoing struggle between digital transition and ground-level implementation in Pakistan’s tax system, as authorities aim to balance compliance enforcement with taxpayer facilitation.
