The federal government is considering extending the Islamabad–Rawalpindi Metro Bus route as part of a broader plan to modernize public transport in the twin cities. In a meeting held on Monday, Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Punjab Minister for Transport and Mass Transit Bilal Akbar Khan reviewed sector wide reforms, with the metro system placed at the center of the discussion.
The session focused on improving service quality, upgrading stations, and enhancing operational efficiency. Officials said the proposals included expanding the current route to accommodate increasing ridership, as thousands of commuters rely on the metro daily. The authorities also discussed elevating passenger convenience through modernized facilities and faster connectivity.
A coordination committee will now be formed to oversee planned upgrades and ensure that approved changes move forward without delays. The meeting also stressed the importance of shifting toward electric public transport to reduce pollution and improve air quality. Mohsin Naqvi noted that Islamabad has already introduced electric buses for the first time and confirmed that more routes and vehicles are planned under the expansion drive.
Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan briefed the interior minister on the latest initiatives taken across Punjab to improve public transport and integrate cleaner mobility options.
