The government has increased the price of high-speed diesel by Rs. 1.39 per liter, effective August 12, 2026, despite a slight decline in the fuel’s ex-refinery price.
Following the latest adjustment, the price of high-speed diesel has increased from Rs. 380.86 to Rs. 382.25 per liter.
The increase has primarily been driven by a higher petroleum levy imposed on diesel.
According to the latest price breakdown, the ex-refinery price of diesel decreased by Rs. 0.61 per liter, falling from Rs. 280.44 to Rs. 279.83 per liter.
However, the reduction was more than offset by a Rs. 2 per liter increase in the petroleum levy.
The petroleum levy on diesel has risen from Rs. 74.28 to Rs. 76.28 per liter.
Other components of the diesel price remained unchanged.
The dealer margin continues to stand at Rs. 8.64 per liter, while the oil marketing company margin remains at Rs. 7.87 per liter. The inland freight equalization margin is also unchanged at Rs. 4.63 per liter.
The latest increase has pushed the diesel price significantly higher compared with last year.
Diesel was priced at Rs. 272.99 per liter on August 16, 2025. The current rate of Rs. 382.25 represents an increase of around 40% over the past year.
The latest adjustment comes as the government continues to revise petroleum prices based on international market conditions, domestic costs and applicable taxes and levies.
