Yesterday, the official Xbox Store leaked exciting new details regarding the highly anticipated GTA 6 Online mode. Currently, developer Rockstar Games and publisher Take-Two Interactive have not officially revealed the online component. Instead, they prefer marketing GTA 6 strictly as a single-player game. However, given the massive success of GTA 5’s online release, fans widely consider GTA 6 Online to be Rockstar and Take-Two’s worst-kept secret. Furthermore, overall marketing for the game has remained extremely sparse.
GTA 6 Online Mode Packaged into Main Game Files
The recent Xbox Store leak indicates that developers will package the online mode into the main GTA 6 game files. Interestingly, Xbox users spotted that the install files are separated into distinct add-on categories. An interface screenshot reveals a “Base game” file. Furthermore, the system lists four separate downloadable components under the “Add-ons” section. These include “Story”, “Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition Upgrade”, “Grand Theft Auto VI: Vintage Vice City Pack”, and an “Extra” file.
Each file carries the label “Add-on | Doesn’t need to be installed”. This module-based setup heavily implies that GTA 6 will function similarly to recent Call of Duty titles. Players will likely have the freedom to selectively download specific modules, such as the campaign or multiplayer modes. Consequently, the “Story” mode serves as one distinct file, while GTA 6 Online will likely act as its own separate file. Developers might place it in the “Extra” category or an entirely new, unrevealed category.
Free-To-Play Potential & Release Strategy
This modular separation presents an encouraging sign. It suggests that GTA 6 Online could launch as a free-to-play release rather than a paid, premium add-on. Rockstar already charges a solid premium for the single-player campaign. Therefore, the company expects to make a killing off microtransactions within the online mode.
Regarding the release timeline, the core single-player game will launch this November. However, fans should not expect Rockstar to show its hand regarding the online mode anytime soon. Insiders believe the online component will release sometime after the core game. This essentially means a second massive GTA 6 release is likely planned for 2027. This staggering makes perfect sense. It gives Rockstar developers necessary time to properly support both the initial November launch and the subsequent online launch.
Take-Two Interactive boss Strauss Zelnick recently stated that the company expects $1 billion in revenue during the current fiscal year. Since the majority of the company’s IP is making way for the November release date, this staggering number likely reflects their confidence in GTA 6’s sales. Everyone expects the core game to be massive, and the eventual Online mode will undoubtedly be nothing short of that.
