Hollow Knight: Silksong Announces Free “Sea of Sorrow” Expansion
2025 has already been a massive year for Team Cherry. The studio finally released the highly anticipated Hollow Knight: Silksong on September 4, 2025. The game launched on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Now, the developers have officially revealed the future of the franchise.
In a new blog post, Team Cherry announced a major expansion titled “Sea of Sorrow”. Best of all, players can download this new content for free in 2026.

What to Expect in “Sea of Sorrow”
This announcement serves as the first official confirmation of long-term support for the indie hit. The “Sea of Sorrow” expansion will add significant content to the base game. According to the developers, fans can look forward to new areas, fresh bosses, and additional tools.
Furthermore, the DLC features a distinct nautical theme. This suggests the new content will look and feel different from the main game. While Team Cherry has not shared specific gameplay details, the aquatic theme has sparked speculation among fans about potential underwater movement mechanics.
This news follows an incredibly successful launch period. Hollow Knight: Silksong was an instant hit upon its release earlier this year. It crashed multiple online storefronts due to high demand and received glowing reviews. Consequently, it secured five nominations at The Game Awards. While it missed out on Game of the Year, it successfully took home the award for Best Action Adventure Game of 2025.
Updates for the Original Hollow Knight
Team Cherry is not just focusing on the sequel. The studio also announced substantial updates for the original Hollow Knight. Specifically, the original title is receiving an official Nintendo Switch 2 update.
On Switch 2, players will see upgrades similar to those found in Silksong. These improvements include high frame-rate modes, higher resolution, and additional graphical effects. Moreover, the game will receive upgrades across all current platforms, including general new features and bug fixes.
PC players do not have to wait to test these changes. Gamers can currently access public beta branches on Steam and GOG to try the updates immediately. Additionally, the developers confirmed full 16:10 and 21:9 aspect ratio support. This is excellent news for users playing on Steam Deck or ultrawide monitors.
With a free expansion confirmed for 2026 and immediate improvements for the original game, the future looks bright for *Hollow Knight* fans.
