Instagram is rolling out a noteworthy update to its Reels camera that will make it easier than ever to capture and edit clips on the fly. In this latest version, users can now record videos up to 20 minutes in length directly through the Reels camera, a significant increase compared to its previous limits. This change reflects Instagram’s push to offer more creative freedom, even as it continues to emphasise shorter, high-engagement content.
“The Instagram Design Team has been hard at work addressing your feedback and identifying key areas for improvement. From customizable touch-ups to longer Reels, our new camera has better usability and new features to help you create your next Reel.” — Instagram Design Team.
Instagram has been crystal clear about one thing: Reels over three minutes simply won’t travel far. You can upload longer videos, but don’t expect them to be the norm. The app algorithm still prioritizes quick, short clips because that’s where most of the platform’s engagement comes from.
Still, if you need the extra runtime, the option is there. Longer uploads are supported, and creators can always build extended videos inside Instagram’s standalone Edits app.
To make that process smoother, Instagram is also upgrading its editing workflow. The new Undo option that allows creators to remove the last clip added in their Reels sequence. Which is an update that simplifies editing on mobile without having to start over.
Instagram has also introduced a slider to control the intensity of its Touch-Up mode, offering finer control over video polish. The Green Screen function has been improved, and countdown and timing tools receive updates designed to make filming smoother and more precise.
Although the camera now supports 20-minute recordings, creators should keep in mind that Instagram’s algorithm still prioritises Reels under 3 minutes. In practical terms, longer videos may receive fewer recommendations, so this feature is best leveraged for narratives, tutorials or episodic content where longer form makes sense. This dual focus suggests Instagram is providing options without abandoning the short-form content model that drives its engagement.
