iPhone 17 Pro Durability Tests Reveal Scratch Issues on Blue and Orange Models

It has been years since Apple faced a major “-gate” controversy, but the iPhone 17 Pro lineup has just sparked one. Users are now calling it “scratchgate,” pointing to how easily the Deep Blue and Cosmic Orange models pick up marks.

A popular YouTuber highlighted the issue in a durability video, showing that both the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max scratch more quickly than expected. The sharp edges of the large rear camera module appeared most vulnerable during the tests.

According to him, the anodized coating is the real culprit. It struggles to stay intact on sharp corners, which makes the blue and orange finishes particularly prone to visible damage. Everyday items such as keys or coins can chip the coating on the camera edges with little effort.

Apple’s decision to introduce an aluminum unibody for the iPhone 17 Pro does offer benefits, especially in terms of heat dissipation. However, the device’s susceptibility to scratches undermines its premium image.

For now, the most effective solution for buyers is simple: use a protective case. It can shield the camera edges and body from everyday wear, though the sharp corners around the camera bump remain exposed.

Despite these concerns, the iPhone 17 Pro series proved impressive in every other test. Both the Pro and Pro Max models performed exceptionally well, reinforcing Apple’s durability claims outside of the scratch issue.
