Islamabad Takes First Step Towards Senior Citizen Welfare

Islamabad’s elderly residents may soon find some financial relief as lawmakers move forward with a bill aimed at supporting senior citizens in the capital.

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Interior has approved the Islamabad Senior Citizenship Bill 2025, which proposes a 25% discount on selected government and private services for residents aged 60 and above.

The legislation was presented by MNA Sharmila Farooqi, who highlighted the need to formally recognize senior citizens and ease their day-to-day expenses. During the committee meeting, MNA Nabil Gabol raised concerns over biometric verification, noting that fingerprints of some elderly individuals may not be easily readable. In response, coordination with NADRA was suggested to ensure smooth implementation.

Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry said the initiative could serve as a pilot project and, if successful, may be extended to other parts of the country.

According to official details, the bill allows senior citizens to avail the benefits, concessions using their existing National Identity Cards, eliminating the need for a separate senior citizen card. The move is expected to simplify access and reduce bureaucratic hurdles for older residents.

Pakistan’s ageing population has long relied on family support, with limited state-backed welfare measures in place. Rising living costs and healthcare expenses have further strained senior citizens, particularly those living on fixed incomes.
