Islamabad is set to receive a comprehensive digital mapping system as the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has approved the development of a citywide GIS-based digital map. The project will be carried out with the support of SUPARCO and the Survey of Pakistan, marking a major step toward smart city planning in the federal capital.
The initiative will create a complete digital basemap of the Islamabad Capital Territory, along with online geospatial portals and a decision support system. Officials said the new system will improve land management, urban planning, infrastructure monitoring, and delivery of public services.
The decision was taken during the first CDA Board meeting of 2026, chaired by Chairman CDA and Chief Commissioner Islamabad Muhammad Ali Randhawa at CDA headquarters. Senior board members and officials participated, while the Vice Chancellor of the University of the Punjab joined virtually.
In addition to the digital mapping project, the Board approved a new plot for Lawyers’ Chambers and a multi-storey parking plaza adjacent to the lower courts, following a request from the Ministry of Law and Justice. A separate plot was also approved for the Pakistan Engineering Council, while discussions were held regarding land allocation for a Field Audit Office Complex in the Mauve Area.
The Board further reviewed the feasibility and detailed design of the Shahdara Dam Project, including plans for a water treatment plant and supply lines to address Islamabad’s rising water demand. Approval was also granted to hire a government or state-owned consultant to upgrade fire safety and HVAC systems at the Supreme Court building.
Officials stated that the digital mapping initiative will lay the foundation for data-driven governance, helping Islamabad transition toward a more efficient and technology-enabled urban management model.
