Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has announced the implementation of a barcode tracking system across all registered water tankers in the Metropolitan city.
According to officials, the barcode tracking system has been introduced to dismantle the illegal water tanker mafia operating in the port city.
Each barcode will provide access to key details, including the identity of the tanker, driver information, designated route, and fitness status.
The identity of each registered tanker and the photograph of the driver can also be verified through the barcode tracking system.
The water board supplies about 450 million gallons daily, far below demand exceeding 1,200 million gallons, leaving a severe and persistent water shortage.
The shortfall is exploited by an informal tanker mafia, forcing ordinary families to pay exorbitant prices, making water among their largest monthly household expenses.
