Karachi Tops Global Pollution Index

KARACHI: In a startling development, Karachi has been declared the most polluted city in the world, topping the global Air Quality Index (AQI). The provincial capital of Sindh is currently experiencing hazardous air quality, with particulate matter (PM) levels soaring to 179, posing serious health risks.

Despite clear skies, the escalating air pollution has raised alarm among experts, who caution that extended exposure could lead to severe respiratory ailments.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported that the city’s temperature peaked at 32°C and dropped to 20.4°C, with mild northern winds and a humidity level of 34%.

Health authorities have advised residents, particularly children and the elderly, to minimize outdoor activities and adopt protective measures against the toxic air.

Experts attribute the rising pollution levels during winter to a combination of low wind speeds, shifting wind directions, and rapidly falling temperatures. As a result, harmful particles settle closer to the ground, creating a dense layer of pollutants, with high concentrations of carbon and soot further deteriorating air quality.
