KMC Launches EV Charging Project in Karachi
The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has announced a major green initiative to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the city, starting with key routes including Shahrah-e-Faisal, Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Road, and Stadium Road, to promote eco-friendly transport and curb rising carbon emissions.
With growing air pollution and increased vehicle emissions in Karachi, the city administration has been seeking sustainable solutions to modernize its transport infrastructure. The new project aligns with Pakistan’s broader climate goals and global efforts to encourage electric mobility.
During a high-level meeting at KMC Head Office, Mayor Murtaza Wahab directed officials to expedite the installation of charging stations. He emphasized that Karachi must lead by example in adopting cleaner technologies.
“This initiative reflects our vision for a greener, smarter, and more sustainable Karachi,” said Mayor Wahab.
KMC plans to allocate land and utilize its own resources to ensure swift execution. The initiative will help citizens transition from conventional fuel-based vehicles to electric ones, reducing both costs and pollution levels.
Officials, including Financial Advisor Gulzar Abro, Director Media Daniyal Alishan, and Deputy Director Planning Musheer Mahar, attended the meeting, expressing full support for the project’s rollout.
The EV infrastructure plan is expected to expand citywide in later phases, supporting Karachi’s transformation into a climate-resilient urban center.
