Lahore Traffic Police has launched a late-night crackdown against heavy and commercial vehicles, taking action against more than 1,000 vehicles at major entry and exit points of the city.
The operation targeted vehicles operating without valid driving licenses, fitness certificates, proper lighting and required tarpaulin covers. According to a traffic police spokesperson, the crackdown was carried out on the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to improve traffic management in Lahore.
Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi inspected several locations during the operation, including Shahdara Chowk, Barkat Puli, Imamia Colony Railway Crossing and Sagian Bridge. Officials briefed him on lane discipline and the movement of heavy traffic at these points.
During the crackdown, traffic police took action against 209 tractor-trolleys carrying soil and sand without tarpaulin covers. Another 122 heavy vehicles were found without valid fitness certificates.
Police also registered cases against 16 drivers for operating heavy machinery and trailers without valid driving licenses.
The operation further targeted 202 overloaded vehicles transporting fodder, hay and steel bars. Authorities stopped 144 unfit and heavily smoke-emitting vehicles from entering Lahore, while challan tickets were issued to another 88 heavy vehicles and machines over excessive smoke emissions.
CTO Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi said only commercial vehicles with valid licenses and complete documentation would be permitted to enter Lahore.
He further warned that vehicles carrying sand, soil and other materials without proper tarpaulin covers would not be allowed to operate, as uncovered loads can create safety and traffic hazards for other road users.
