An experimental build of the highly anticipated Nvidia DLSS 5 neural rendering technology has leaked online. Consequently, PC modders are already forcing the unreleased software into existing games. Nvidia originally planned to officially launch this feature in the fall. However, eager fans can now test the AI-powered graphics tech months ahead of time.
The leak surprisingly originated from the PC version of NBA 2K27. Hardware enthusiast Renan Maniero discovered an Nvidia library labeled “DLSSNR” hidden in the game files. This specific file contains the runtime required for the new Neural Rendering technology. Soon after this discovery, the RenoDX modding community extracted the file. They immediately began injecting the unfinished tech into major titles like Control, Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and The Last of Us Part 2.

Nvidia claims this neural rendering model represents its biggest graphical leap since real-time ray tracing. Specifically, the technology uses game data to enhance lighting, materials, skin, and hair in real-time. Instead of just upscaling images, DLSS 5 actively generates new details.
AI Overstepping Artistic Vision
Despite the technological leap, the leak has sparked massive player backlash. Fans quickly noticed that the AI rendering actively changes familiar character faces. For instance, players applied the tech to Cloud from Final Fantasy 7 and Ellie from The Last of Us. As a result, the characters looked strikingly different from their original designs.
Therefore, players are heavily criticizing Nvidia. Many fans argue that the AI completely oversteps the original developers’ intended artistic vision. Furthermore, critics claim the aggressive AI enhancements push classic character models straight into the uncanny valley. Instead of preserving the artwork, the tool alters the fundamental look of the game.
Nvidia DLSS 5 Comes With A Massive Performance Cost
Beyond the visual controversy, the leaked tech demands extreme hardware power. Early benchmark testing reveals a brutal performance hit. For example, one user tested the leaked DLSS 5 in ‘Control’ using an RTX 5070 Ti graphics card at 4K resolution. When they enabled the feature on character models, framerates instantly plummeted from a smooth 71 FPS down to a choppy 35 FPS.
Currently, the leaked runtime only functions on RTX 50 Series GPUs. However, gamers should remember that this is an unoptimized, unfinished build. Nvidia forced none of these current implementations… modders hacked them into the games. Consequently, Nvidia still has plenty of time to optimize the software before the official fall release. Final hardware support also remains unconfirmed.
