The Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) is replacing old meters with Smart AMI units and enforcing stricter rules for net metering projects to ensure only certified solar devices connect to the grid.
With rising solar adoption, cases of substandard and non-compliant inverters have threatened grid stability. LESCO’s new measures aim to protect consumers, streamline billing, and maintain the integrity of Pakistan’s net metering program.
Under the updated framework, all net metering applicants must provide the serial number and manufacturer name of their inverter, which will be verified against LESCO’s ERP system. Missing or incorrect information will result in automatic cancellation of meter allocation.
A LESCO spokesperson said,
“These measures are designed to protect consumers and the electricity grid from substandard installations. Only approved and certified solar devices will be allowed to connect, and any violations will be dealt with severely.”
Additionally, LESCO is phasing out old two-way green meters on solar connections and replacing them with modern AMI and AMR smart meters, directly linked to the billing system. This upgrade eliminates manual readings, reduces billing errors, and helps prevent power theft.
The company banned the purchase of two-way green meters in September 2025, reinforcing its commitment to grid stability and efficient solar integration. Consumers are urged to register and verify their inverters before applying to avoid delays in meter installation.
