Lahore High Court (LHC) has barred judges recently issued official cars from fitting them with green number plates, blue warning lights or the monogram, according to a notification issued by Lahore Sessions Judge Tariq Khurshid Khawaja.
The notification, sent to additional sessions judges and civil judges in Lahore, states that the vehicles are meant strictly for private use and cannot be presented as official cars. Any judge found violating the directive by using a green number plate, blue light or monogram will face action, the notification warned.
Media reported that additional sessions judges across Punjab have since relayed the instructions to judges in their respective districts. A total of 189 vehicles have been allotted to additional sessions judges and 400 to civil judges in Lahore.
The government will not cover maintenance expenses for the vehicles, which judges must bear themselves. Judges will continue to receive only the petrol allowance already included in their salaries, with no additional fuel support provided for the cars.
