Insomniac Games is officially dropping the character-switching mechanic for Marvel Wolverine. Fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief. The upcoming title will completely avoid the divisive stealth missions seen in the recent Spider-Man games. Moving forward, you will only play as Logan with maximum focus on the Wolverine experience.
Senior Project Director Jess Reiner-Reed and Head of Technology Mike Fitzgerald recently confirmed this major gameplay detail. They explicitly stated that the studio is focusing entirely on nailing the core Wolverine experience. Insomniac wants to perfect Logan’s gameplay without any forced distractions. Consequently, the game will not pull players out of the action to play as alternative characters.
However, Logan will not fight alone. Familiar mutants will periodically join the action. Insomniac has confirmed appearances by Jean Grey, Omega Red, Mystique, and Sabretooth. Fortunately, you will not be forced to control them. These characters operate independently during major combat sequences. They will also team up with Logan organically. Players can expect to execute brutal tag-team combos and special attacks alongside these partners.
Furthermore, Insomniac just crushed another popular fan theory. Marvel Wolverine shares the established Earth-1048 universe with the Spider-Man franchise. Yet, the web-slinger will not make an appearance. Creative Director Marcus Smith confirmed that Spider-Man will not show up in this game. Still, players can definitely expect Insomniac’s standard universe-building Easter eggs.
Finally, the game is currently gearing up for a highly competitive Fall release. Interestingly, developers are deliberately positioning the launch window to dodge the massive market impact of GTA 6, which arrives this November.
