More Expensive Than Game of Thrones: The Show Netflix Refuses to Cancel

Published by

Netflix’s high concept science fiction series 3 Body Problem has become a standout example of how big budgets and ambitious storytelling can still capture global attention. The adaptation of Liu Cixin’s seminal sci fi novel has not only drawn substantial viewership but also helped justify Netflix’s investment in high budget genre television.

The show was developed by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss alongside Alexander Woo, launched on Netflix in March 2024 and has since ranked among the most expensive television productions ever made. Initial reporting cited a total series cost of approximately 233 million dollars, a figure that reflects roughly 20 million per episode for its eight episode first season. Both Benioff and Weiss also adapted the world-famous A Song of Ice & Fire book series to the critically-acclaimed Game of Thrones TV show for HBO that ran from 2011-2019.

3 Body Problem spans multiple timelines and continents as it explores earth-shattering scientific discoveries and an impending existential threat rooted in a chaotic alien world. The narrative’s complexity and philosophical depth set it apart from typical genre fare and underscore Netflix’s confidence in the property’s global appeal.

The ensemble cast includes Jovan Adepo, Liam Cunningham, Eiza González, Jess Hong, Benedict Wong and John Bradley, among others, bringing to life characters grappling with both scientific enigmas and human conflict. The series also features a score by acclaimed composer Ramin Djawadi, known for his work on other major franchises.

3 Body Problem has performed well on Netflix since its release and at various times appeared near the top of the platform’s global charts indicating strong audience engagement. Critical reception has been generally favorable with reviewers commending its scope and ambition while noting that the rich thematic material may require more seasons to fully realize.

The production journey was marked by notable events including the widely reported controversy around the poisoning of a series rights holder in China, which drew media attention just as the adaptation was poised for global release. That incident and subsequent legal developments underscored the complex international dynamics surrounding the property.

Netflix and the creators have confirmed that the story will continue across multiple seasons with filming for season two under way in Budapest, Hungary. The renewal reflects both confidence in the series’ creative direction and its role in Netflix’s broader strategy to compete with other platforms through premium high concept television.

Unfortunately, streaming platforms are increasingly simplifying, or “dumbing down,” TV shows and movies to accommodate “second screen viewing,” where audiences scroll on their phones while watching. Driven by data showing high distraction rates, creators are instructed to use obvious dialogue and remove nuances, ensuring viewers can follow plots without full attention. The success of 3 Body Problem brings to the front the fact that there is still a significant global audience for smart science fiction on streaming platforms and may encourage further investment in similar projects.
