Netflix Kills Mobile Casting Support for Modern TVs & Chromecasts

Netflix has officially changed how you interact with your TV. As of yesterday, December 1, the streaming giant quietly removed the ability to “cast” content from its mobile app to most modern televisions.

This significant update impacts a wide range of hardware. Specifically, the change affects newer Chromecast models and the Google TV Streamer. Consequently, you can no longer control playback on these devices using your phone.

The Shift to Native Apps by Netflix

Users first spotted the missing “Cast” button in mid-November. Reports on Reddit initially highlighted the change, and an update to the official Netflix support page has now confirmed it.

The company provided no advance warning. Instead of casting, Netflix now directs users to the physical remote included with their TV hardware. You must use the native Netflix app installed on your TV or streaming device to browse and play content.

There are minor exceptions to this new rule. Casting functionality currently remains available for:

  • Older Chromecast models that do not have physical remotes.
  • TVs with specific built-in Google Cast support.

However, a strict limitation applies here. Even on these legacy devices, casting is unavailable for subscribers on Netflix’s ad-supported plan. The feature remains exclusive to those on costlier ad-free plans.

Why the Change?

The decision has caused confusion among users. Reportedly, Netflix customer service claimed the removal was made to improve the customer experience. However, the company did not explain how removing a popular feature achieves this goal.

This strategy mirrors a previous move by the company. In 2019, Netflix removed AirPlay support from its iOS app. Just like today, the company is pushing users away from mobile-to-TV protocols and toward native TV interfaces.
