MediaTek’s next flagship chipset is starting to take shape as new leaks reveal early details about the Dimensity 9600. The upcoming processor will likely power many high-end Android phones and tablets launching later this year.
According to the source, the Dimensity 9600 will use a 2nm manufacturing process. However, the leak does not confirm if MediaTek will rely on TSMC’s N2P technology or Samsung’s SF2 process.
The chipset is expected to feature a 2+3+3 all-big-core CPU design. MediaTek reportedly wants to push stronger single-core performance with this setup. In fact, the tipster claims the chip could compete with Apple’s flagship A-series processors in single-core tasks. Still, the report does not clarify whether the comparison targets the current A19 Pro or the upcoming A20 chip.
The leak also leaves out clock speed details. Even so, the early information suggests MediaTek is focusing heavily on performance improvements for premium devices.
Besides CPU upgrades, the Dimensity 9600 may introduce improved Compute Matrix Engine (CME) and Scalable Matrix Extension (SME) features. However, MediaTek reportedly will not make major cache changes this time.
Graphics performance could also see a noticeable boost. The Dimensity 9600 is tipped to offer native frame interpolation and resolution upscaling support. In addition, the chipset may deliver better ray-tracing performance than rival 2nm processors.
MediaTek is expected to debut the first Dimensity 9600-powered smartphones in September. Interestingly, that is also when the first Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 devices are likely to arrive.
As competition grows in the flagship Android market, both Qualcomm and MediaTek appear ready to push performance further with their next-generation mobile chips.
