Apple’s 20th-anniversary iPhone is still expected to feature a major glass-focused redesign in 2027, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Gurman’s report counters a claim from earlier reports that came from multiple sources. They said earlier that Apple had canceled plans for an all-glass iPhone planned for next year.
The 2027 iPhone Pro models will reportedly use glass across both the front and rear. The glass will also curve around the sides of the device. A thin metal band will sit between the glass sections, creating a design that gives the phone a more seamless look. Apple is reportedly developing the devices under the internal names V73 and V74.
According to Gurman, Apple has not abandoned its plans for a glass-heavy iPhone. Instead, the company has dropped a more ambitious version of the design. That version would have used even more glass than the current design. However, Apple reportedly scrapped it early in the development process.
This could explain the difference between Gurman’s report and what other sources claim. They may have been referring to the more extreme all-glass design that Apple already dropped.
Earlier sources also suggested that Apple could extend the all-glass design to future iPhone Pro and Pro Max models. However, recent reports have not pointed to a separate iPhone model with such a design.
Instead, most recent rumors indicate that the glass-heavy redesign is already planned for next year’s iPhone Pro and Pro Max models. Apple is expected to make the 2027 lineup a major design milestone. The company will mark 20 years since the original iPhone launched in 2007.
