The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has commenced the re-registration process for Virtual Private Network (VPN) service providers, introducing a new class license system for data services. This initiative aims to enhance the regulation of VPN services across the country.
According to the new framework, VPN service providers are bound to apply for class licenses from the PTA, and for this, they must pay a fee ranging between Rs100,000 to Rs300,000 for obtaining each license. This is expected to force VPN providers to come under the regulation of the local laws on the protection of data.
One of the more important consequences of this development is that the PTA is going to become capable of obtaining users’ data and browsing histories. This measure is designed to bolster cybersecurity efforts, enabling the authorities to monitor and respond to cyber threats more effectively.
The re-registration process also demands that VPN providers set up data centers in Pakistan hence ensuring compliance with the local laws and increased security of data protection.
Before the enactment of this decision, the PTA conducted consultations with various stakeholders, including the Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA), to streamline the registration process of VPNs and facilitate legitimate users.
This initiative reflects the PTA’s commitment to improving cybersecurity measures and ensuring the secure and regulated use of VPN services in Pakistan.
