New Witcher 3 Expansion “All-But-Confirmed” for May 2026 Launch

It officially looks like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is not finished yet. While analysts previously suggested a new expansion could arrive in 2026, fans remained sceptical. However, recent developments have turned this possibility into an “all-but-confirmed” reality. A telling earnings call from CD Projekt Red has finally added substantial weight to the rumours.

The Evidence Builds Up

The initial leak came from Borys Niespielak, a trusted insider in the Polish video game industry. He reported that Fool’s Theory is developing this expansion alongside their work on the Witcher 1 Remake. Recently, Niespielak verified via email that several sources have confirmed the expansion’s existence.

Furthermore, analyst Mateusz Chrzanowski corroborated these claims last month. He provided specific details, suggesting a $30 price point and a May 2026 release window.

The most damning evidence, however, comes directly from the studio. According to a recent earnings call, CD Projekt Red stated:

There is a chance that new content hinted upon in recent calls and reports may see release in the coming year.

While they did not explicitly name The Witcher 3, this statement aligns perfectly with the ongoing leaks. When Eurogamer reached out, the studio gave its standard response about not commenting on rumours, but the earnings call speaks volumes.

A Strategic Bridge to the Future

Releasing an expansion for a decade-old game is rare, but not unprecedented. Gearbox Software successfully used this strategy with Borderlands 2. They released the “Commander Lilith DLC” seven years after launch to bridge the narrative gap to Borderlands 3.

This rumoured Witcher 3 expansion appears to follow that same playbook. It serves as a massive advertisement for the upcoming Witcher trilogy (Polaris). Since The Witcher 3 continues to sell incredibly well, the potential audience for this content is massive.

What Fans Can Expect from The Witcher 3 Expansion

Speculation currently points to Ciri as the focus of this new adventure. This makes narrative sense, as she is the main character of the new trilogy. A Ciri-centric story would set the stage for her next adventure without risking the perfect sendoff Geralt received in Blood and Wine.

However, big questions remain. Fans are wondering if Fool’s Theory can match the legendary quality of CD Projekt Red’s previous expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. Additionally, technical concerns exist. CD Projekt Red is shifting to Unreal Engine 5, so returning to the Red Engine for this expansion could cause development hiccups.

The expansion did not appear at The Game Awards 2025 as some expected. Consequently, fans must now wait for an official announcement to see if the May release date holds true.
