OpenAI has started testing ads inside ChatGPT, marking a major shift for the popular AI platform. In a recent blog post, the company confirmed that ads are now rolling out to Free and Go users in the United States. However, the move comes with clear limits and user controls.
Only logged-in adult users will see ads. Users under 18 will not be served any advertisements. Meanwhile, subscribers on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education plans will continue to use ChatGPT without ads.
Importantly, OpenAI says ads will not affect how ChatGPT answers questions. The company stressed that sponsored content will stay separate from AI responses. Each ad will carry a clear “Sponsored” label so users can easily tell the difference.
Free users will also have a choice. They can disable ads if they prefer an ad-free experience. However, that option will reduce their free message limit. This gives users flexibility, but it also protects OpenAI’s revenue model.
The company explained how ad targeting will work. Ads will rely on past conversations, current chat topics, and previous ad interactions. At the same time, OpenAI says it will not share chat histories, saved memories, or personal user information with advertisers. Advertisers will only receive data about how users interact with ads.
OpenAI also placed boundaries around sensitive topics. Ads will not appear in conversations related to health, mental health, or politics. This step aims to reduce risk and protect user trust.
In addition, users will have direct control over their ad experience. They can dismiss specific ads, provide feedback, check why an ad appears, delete ad-related data, and adjust ad preferences.
