Opera has introduced a new security feature called Paste Protect. It defends against malicious takeover of your clipboard. The feature debuted in the Opera Developer 134 update in late June. Paste Protect specifically targets clipboard injection attacks. These include a rising scam technique known as ClickFix. It is enabled by default in the developer build. Opera calls it the first building block of broader clipboard protection.
ClickFix has become a serious and growing threat. The attack tricks users into compromising their own systems. A fake error message or verification prompt appears on a webpage. It instructs the user to paste and run a command to fix an issue.
The danger lies in what actually gets copied. The malicious page secretly places a harmful command in the clipboard. The user then pastes it into a terminal or run dialog. That single action can install malware on their device.
This attack often slips past traditional antivirus tools. The user technically runs the command themselves, which looks legitimate. No suspicious file download triggers the usual security alarms. That makes ClickFix hard for standard defenses to catch.
Paste Protect works by monitoring clipboard activity within the browser. Opera engineered it to intercept clipboard APIs at the renderer level. It can flag or block suspicious injection attempts before harm occurs. The build also fixes issues with the blocking popup interface.
The feature marks an evolution of Opera’s earlier clipboard defense. Opera first added basic paste protection back in 2021. That version guarded crypto wallet addresses and bank numbers from swapping. The new version tackles the more dangerous code-injection threat directly.
For now, Paste Protect remains in the developer and Early Bird channels. Opera is testing it before a wider stable release. The company invited users to try it and share feedback.
