Pakistan Railways has officially launched its largest digitisation initiative to date. The organisation aims to modernise its entire network by June 2026. The Directorate of IT presented the roadmap for the Railway Advanced Infrastructure Network (RAIN) Project Phase I during a high-level meeting on Monday.
Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi chaired the meeting and reviewed the progress. The Directorate assured the minister that the project remains on track for completion by the June deadline.
Pakistan Railways: Inside the RAIN Project
The RAIN Project Phase I focuses heavily on connectivity and real-time data. Pakistan Railways will introduce GPS tracking for all trains and locomotives. This move allows for precise location monitoring and better traffic management.
Furthermore, the project includes the “fiberisation” of 1,700 kilometres of the ML-1 railway network. This massive infrastructure upgrade enables real-time monitoring and supports data-driven decision-making.
Additionally, passengers will see tangible changes at stations. The project establishes “safe and smart” railway stations in major cities. These upgrades follow the successful model of the Rawalpindi station. Selected stations will also offer high-speed internet to enhance the passenger experience.
Self-Reliance & Safety
Notably, Pakistan Railways is funding Phase I entirely through its own revenue. This decision highlights the organisation’s push for financial self-reliance and operational sustainability.
Minister Abbasi emphasised the operational benefits of this tech overhaul. The new system aims to significantly reduce train delays and accidents. To achieve this, the project includes new command and control centres at the Lahore headquarters and all divisional offices. These centres will ensure rapid responses to emergency situations.
According to the minister, RAIN represents a major step toward making the organisation safe, efficient, and passenger-centric.
Senate Committee Elects New Chairman
In a separate development regarding railway oversight, the Senate Standing Committee on Railways has a new leader. On Monday, the committee unanimously elected Senator Shahadat Awan as its chairman.
The election occurred at the Parliament House. Senator Dost Ali Jeesar proposed Senator Awan’s name, and Senator Ashraf Ali Jatoi seconded the motion. The committee members subsequently confirmed the appointment unanimously.
