Pakistan Secures Spot As First Foreign Country In Chinas Astronaut Training Program

In a historic collaboration, Pakistan has become the first foreign nation to participate in China’s space station astronaut training program, a significant leap for the country’s space exploration efforts. The announcement was made by Shafaat Ali, Director of Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), on Friday.

Under an agreement signed by Pakistan and China, two Pakistani astronauts will be sent to China for training, based on merit. The selection process for these astronauts includes a thorough review of academic credentials, professional experience, and physical fitness, with the final candidates expected to be confirmed by 2026.

Eligible candidates are expected to hold PhDs, be experienced pilots, and meet stringent physical criteria, ensuring only the best are chosen for this prestigious opportunity.

Historically, China’s astronaut training program was reserved for its own citizens. However, this landmark agreement reflects China’s growing partnership with Pakistan, strengthening bilateral ties and fostering deeper cooperation in space exploration.

The program will offer Pakistani astronauts the chance to participate in cutting-edge scientific research, including experiments in biological and medical sciences, aerospace technology, applied physics, space radiation, material sciences, microgravity, and astronomy, among others.

These research initiatives will contribute to global advancements in space technology and our understanding of the universe.

SUPARCO’s Shafaat Ali expressed his gratitude towards Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for his leadership in securing this opportunity and thanked the Chinese government for welcoming Pakistan into the program.
