Pakistan has officially cemented its position as the first international customer for China’s latest stealth aircraft. Following intensive negotiations, Islamabad agreed to purchase up to 40 Chinese J-35 fighter jets. This acquisition marks a massive operational upgrade for the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) and fundamentally alters the military balance in South Asia.
The Shenyang Aircraft Corporation manufactures the J-35A. Global defense experts widely consider this fifth-generation jet as Beijing’s direct answer to the American F-35. China first publicly unveiled the stealth aircraft at the 2024 Zhuhai Airshow. Now, Pakistan will integrate this cutting-edge platform into its expanding arsenal.
To secure the deal, the manufacturer reportedly fast-tracked the delivery schedule and offered Pakistan a substantial financial discount. Consequently, the Pakistani Ministry of Defense confirmed that the first group of air force pilots is already training in China. The military expects the initial aircraft deliveries within just two months.
A Broader Defense Package Alongside J-35 Jets
Furthermore, this procurement deal extends far beyond stealth fighter jets. The Pakistani military is actively pursuing a highly integrated modernization initiative.
Therefore, the comprehensive agreement also includes KJ-500 airborne early warning and control (AWACS) aircraft. Additionally, Pakistan will acquire advanced HQ-19 air defense systems. Together, these assets create a formidable, layered defense network.
The Catalyst: Validated Combat Performance
This massive procurement did not happen in a vacuum. Rising regional tensions and a recent, decisive combat performance heavily influenced Pakistan’s decision.
Last month, during a major military conflict with India, Pakistani forces completely dominated the skies. Pakistani J-10s successfully shot down at least five Indian aircraft. This impressive kill list included three Rafale jets, one Sukhoi, and one MiG. Furthermore, Pakistani forces destroyed an Israeli reconnaissance drone during the clashes.
This victory firmly validated Pakistan’s growing reliance on Chinese aviation technology. The successful deployment of the J-10s boosted Islamabad’s operational trust in China’s combat systems, paving the way directly for the J-35 agreement.
Meanwhile, panic is growing in New Delhi. Indian officials realize the introduction of the J-35A will drastically shift the regional power dynamic. Analysts predict India will now scramble to accelerate its own fifth-generation fighter program. However, with Pakistani pilots already training and J-35 deliveries imminent, Islamabad has clearly secured the immediate tactical advantage.
