The Environmental Protection Department of Pakistan announced that Lahore is now home to the country’s first anti-smog tower.
The tower, which could filter 50,000 cubic meters of air every hour, was built in collaboration between the department and a private enterprise. City officials have stated their intention to build additional units based on the tower’s performance.
Additionally, the tower, located in Mehmood Booti, was supposed to filter 1.2 million cubic meters of air every day by attracting pollutants with electrostatic charges. The tower was built on-site by an Islamabad-based private enterprise.
According to Imran Hamid Sheikh, Director General of Environment, the tower was necessary due to the high levels of chemical pollutants released by industry and dumping sites. Additionally, he mentioned that the Punjab government did not spend any money on the 15-day trial phase.
If the results are satisfactory, other towers will be installed in other sections of Lahore to broaden the project’s impact. This experiment has the potential to open the door to new approaches to reducing the increasing pollution problem in Pakistan’s major cities.
