Pinterest Introduces Voice-Enabled AI Search Assistant for Visual Discovery

Pinterest has introduced its Pinterest Assistant, an AI-driven search tool that combines spoken queries with selected images, allowing users to search more naturally and interactively. The new feature marks a major step in Pinterest’s evolution from a purely visual discovery platform into a conversational, AI-powered shopping and inspiration hub.

Unlike traditional text-based search, the assistant supports multimodal inputs,  it recognizes both voice and images at the same time. For example, a user can tap the microphone icon and say, “Find shoes that match these pants,” and Pinterest Assistant will generate visually curated results with an audible description. According to Pinterest, the model is “visual-first”, meaning it interprets text, images, and voice inputs together to produce relevant visual suggestions instead of simple text lists.

Currently, the pilot program is rolling out to U.S. users aged 18 and above, with a broader global release planned in the coming weeks. Pinterest says the feature is particularly designed for its 600 million monthly active users, especially Gen Z, who increasingly prefer conversational and intuitive digital interfaces over traditional keyword-based searches.

The launch positions Pinterest as a serious player in conversational commerce, where AI-driven interactions merge shopping, style discovery, and personalization. The assistant draws upon user behavior, saved boards, and Pinterest’s “Taste Graph” to tailor recommendations that match individual preferences.

In essence, Pinterest’s new AI assistant redefines how people find inspiration online, transforming the experience from simple searching to an engaging “show and tell” interaction.
