The Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA) has fined several restaurants and food chains across the province for tax fraud, after finding that customers were charged sales tax that was never properly recorded in official tax filings.
A PRA spokesperson said inspections uncovered cases where tax was included in customer bills but did not match the corresponding entries in businesses’ tax records, pointing to deliberate misreporting. Notices were also issued to food outlets that had failed to register with the Electronic Invoice Monitoring System (e-IMS).
The crackdown covered Lahore, Faisalabad, Sargodha and Multan, and was launched in response to public complaints and vigilance reports about irregular billing practices in the food sector.
The PRA has directed all restaurants and food chains to issue accurate tax invoices and maintain transparent financial records. The spokesperson clarified that businesses with monthly sales of up to Rs 500,000 are also required to issue invoices through the e-IMS.
Warning against further violations, the spokesperson said any misappropriation of tax collected from customers would not be tolerated and that enforcement action would continue across the province.
