Pta Fia Take Action Against Illegal International Sim Sales

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), in collaboration with the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Cyber Crime Wing, has launched a nationwide crackdown against the illegal sale of pre-activated international SIM cards. The raids, conducted in major cities including Multan, Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, and Karachi, resulted in the seizure of thousands of illegal SIMs and the arrest of multiple individuals involved in these unlawful activities.

In Multan alone, five separate raids led to the confiscation of 7,064 illegal SIMs, with eight individuals taken into custody. In Lahore and Gujranwala, authorities seized a total of 252 illegal SIM cards, resulting in the arrest of shop owners engaged in unauthorized sales.

Rawalpindi witnessed multiple recoveries of illegal SIM cards, including 335 UK-based SIMs confiscated in recent operations. Meanwhile, in Karachi, authorities seized 10 international SIMs, leading to the immediate arrest of the shop owner.

Nationwide Crackdown on Illicit SIM Trade

As part of an extensive effort to curb fraudulent telecommunication activities, PTA and FIA conducted additional raids in Abbottabad, Skardu, Peshawar, Lahore, and Sialkot. These operations targeted individuals and businesses involved in the unauthorized distribution of international SIM cards, which are frequently used for illicit activities such as fraud and unverified communications.

Several suspects have been apprehended during these operations, and a significant number of illegally activated SIM cards have been recovered, further tightening the grip on unauthorized mobile communications.

Security Threats and Regulatory Concerns

PTA and FIA have raised concerns about the illegal trade of active SIM cards, which pose a significant risk to national security and public safety. These unauthorized SIMs facilitate anonymous and untraceable communications, which criminals exploit for various illegal activities, including cybercrime, financial fraud, and abductions. The use of such SIMs has been flagged as a serious threat by security agencies, prompting rigorous enforcement measures.

Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious sale of illegal SIM cards. PTA has encouraged citizens to lodge complaints through its official website to aid in cracking down on this illegal practice. Additionally, strict regulatory actions are being reinforced to prevent unauthorized SIM distribution, with violators facing severe legal consequences.

The government and telecom regulators continue to work closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure that mobile network services remain compliant with legal frameworks and do not fall into the hands of criminal elements. PTA remains committed to eliminating illegal SIM operations and enhancing cybersecurity for a safer digital environment.
