Punjab Launches 1100 E Taxis As Part Of Green Transit Vision

The Punjab government has approved a pilot phase for its electric taxi (e-taxi) project, aiming to transform public transportation. This initiative will deploy 1,100 electric cabs and install solar-powered charging stations.

The decision came during a high-level session. It was chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. Officials reviewed several public transport initiatives. These included the Yellow Line mass transit system and plans to modernize existing infrastructure.

The meeting granted in-principle approval of the financial model for the e-taxi scheme and emphasized swift implementation. CM Maryam Nawaz instructed authorities to ensure that future transit routes, especially in cities like Gujranwala, prioritize public convenience.

Solar-Powered Charging Stations and Subsidies in Focus

A major highlight of the e-taxi initiative is its emphasis on clean energy. Also, the government plans to install solar-powered e-charging stations, reinforcing its commitment to reducing environmental impact. A proposal to set up these stations alongside petrol pumps was also discussed to improve accessibility.

To support drivers and encourage adoption, the government will offer subsidies under the e-taxi scheme. These incentives aim to reduce the upfront cost of switching to electric vehicles and promote wider usage.

Yellow Line Construction to Begin Immediately

During the session, it was also decided that construction on the Yellow Line corridor from Jinnah Terminal to Harbanspura should begin without delay. The project is a key part of Punjab’s broader strategy to enhance urban connectivity and reduce congestion.

In a separate but related move, CM Maryam Nawaz also ordered free medical treatment for Pakistani patients who recently returned from India due to escalating bilateral tensions. This directive reflects the administration’s broader focus on public welfare alongside infrastructure development.
