Punjab Police Register Three Cases Under PECA for Deepfake Content Targeting CM Maryam Nawaz

Lahore: Punjab Police have registered three cases under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2025 against individuals accused of sharing AI-generated deepfake videos and malicious propaganda targeting Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and state institutions.

At the Shahdara, Shahdara Town, and Kot Lakhpat stations, the police submitted additional allegations under sections 500, 504, and 505-1(C) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).  Local citizens and merchants submitted numerous complaints to the police authorities.  No arrests have been made by law enforcement authorities as of yet.

According to Mohammad Amir, the complainant at the Shahdara Town police station, a social media user named Rana Mohammad Dawood created an illicit AI video of CM Maryam Nawaz on Facebook. The video was intended to damage Nawaz’s reputation.  In order to substantiate his assertion, Amir submitted evidence of Facebook links.

The Kot Lakhpat police station received a complaint from Abdul Raoof, who accused an unknown operator of the ‘The Last Hope’ social media page of creating fraudulent Maryam Nawaz videos and images.  The accused individual claims that they initiated an anti-government campaign that was extensively disseminated on the internet in order to incite public unrest.

Khalid Yasin, who resides in Raza Town, filed a complaint with the Shahdara police station regarding individuals who are disseminating inaccurate information regarding national security institutions.  As per the complainant, the dissemination of abusive language in false news material by multiple individuals allegedly resulted in public disturbances.

As deepfake technology continues to pose significant challenges in the digital era, law enforcement agencies are ramping up efforts to curb the spread of AI-generated disinformation and protect individuals from reputational harm.
