Punjab Police is introducing high-tech patrol vehicles fitted with advanced surveillance systems to identify fake plates, e-challan defaulters, and wanted criminals across Punjab.
The “Police Eye Smart Van” is in its final development stage and will soon be deployed to monitor highways and public spaces across the province.
Each vehicle will be fitted with 360-degree cameras that can conduct real-time surveillance while the van moves through roads and public areas.
The cameras are designed to instantly identify vehicles belonging to defaulters and flag proclaimed offenders, enabling police to respond swiftly at any time.
Technology and integration
The smart vans will be connected to the Safe Cities Authority system, which will generate automatic alerts whenever a vehicle or suspect is detected.
Cameras will capture and update details of vehicles and citizens within a 100-metre range, and overloaded vehicles can be identified at a click.
Police officials stated the fleet will also include electric vehicles, a decision aimed at cutting fuel costs and supporting the government’s energy efficiency goals.
Cost and approval
Officials estimate that each vehicle, including all accessories and equipment, will cost approximately Rs110 million, making it a significant investment for Punjab Police.
The first prototype is expected to be completed next week and will then be presented to the Punjab Chief Minister for formal approval.
The project is being supervised by Additional Inspector General Logistics and Procurement Fawaduddin Qureshi, who is overseeing all stages of the vehicle’s development.
Rollout plan
Following the approval of chief minister Maryam Nawaz, the first smart van will be deployed on model roads in Lahore as the initial phase of the rollout.
Between one and three smart vans may be allocated to each district across Punjab, extending surveillance coverage to roads throughout the entire province.
Police expressed confidence that the smart vans will improve traffic flow, support action against offenders, and help authorities apprehend proclaimed criminals more effectively.
