Punjab has become the first province in Pakistan to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a formal subject at the primary level.
The Punjab Education Department has approved the inclusion of AI in the curriculum for grades one through five, with implementation scheduled for the academic session 2027-28.
Under the new curriculum, AI will be taught as a standalone subject with a dedicated class period, on par with other core subjects. The subject will also be part of the formal examination system, and students will be required to pass it.
Education authorities say the initiative aims to familiarise students with modern technology and strengthen their creative and analytical abilities. Officials believe early AI education will improve children’s problem-solving skills and overall intellectual development.
The final approval for the primary-level AI curriculum is expected to be granted at a meeting of the Board of Governors of PITAC.
