Qualcomm May Shift 2nm Chip Orders Back to Samsung

Qualcomm is again talking with Samsung about making its next 2nm chips, a move that could reshape both companies’ futures. Cristiano Amon, Qualcomm’s CEO, confirmed the talks, even though Samsung later chose not to comment.

This update stands out because Samsung’s foundry business has faced a rough period. The two firms last worked together in 2022, when Samsung made the first Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. That chip drew heavy criticism due to thermal issues, which hurt its reputation. At the same time, Samsung also failed to meet Qualcomm’s yield targets. As a result, Qualcomm moved its production to TSMC.

Now, however, Qualcomm has reopened talks with Samsung for its 2nm process. People close to the deal say Qualcomm has already finished the chip design. The company is also said to be ready to move into production. That shows how serious these discussions have become.

Still, no final agreement exists yet. Even so, Samsung seems eager to change its recent struggles. The head of its chip division has been asked to make the foundry business profitable again. Because of that goal, Samsung has signed new supply deals with several customers. These deals have helped improve the company’s outlook.

Most recently, Tesla agreed to work with Samsung to produce high-end chips for AI use. That contract has given Samsung a much-needed boost in confidence. It also shows that major players still see value in Samsung’s chip-making skills.

What remains unclear is the exact product Qualcomm has in mind. Samsung could end up making the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. On the other hand, the two companies may be working on something else. Either way, this renewed link between Qualcomm and Samsung could shape the next wave of mobile chips.
