The ban on Basant in Rawalpindi has turned into a joke. Kite flying is continuing with full force across the city. The police have completely failed to control the situation.
Despite the restrictions, the sky is full of kites. Enthusiasts are openly defying the law. The administration’s claims of strict action have proven hollow. The situation on the ground contradicts official claims. Rawalpindi Police asserted they would crack down on violators, but these claims have fallen flat.
The consequences are dangerous. Just two days ago, “killer dor” (lethal kite string) injured two children. The authorities are unable to stop the distribution or use of these dangerous strings.
Noise pollution is rampant. A notification explicitly bans the use of loudspeakers until February 22. However, the city is ignoring this order.
“Bo Kata” chants are echoing from rooftops, particularly in the Rawalpindi Cantonment and City areas. Loudspeakers are being used extensively throughout the city to celebrate Basant. The administration seems powerless to silence the noise or clear the skies.
