Samsung is going to retire its built-in messaging app, Samsung Messages, from its smartphones. This change marks a clear shift in the company’s messaging strategy. Over time, Google Messages has already become the default on newer devices, making this transition feel natural for users.
In an official notice shared on its website, Samsung confirmed that the Samsung Messages app will be discontinued in July 2026. As a result, users are being encouraged to switch to Google Messages for their daily texting needs. This move shows how deeply Samsung is aligning its software with Google’s ecosystem.
Users are advised to check the Messages app itself for the exact end date on their device. Meanwhile, Samsung clarified that phones running Android 11 or older will not be impacted by this change. These devices will continue to support the Samsung Messages app without interruption.
At the same time, newer models are already moving in a different direction. Devices like the Samsung Galaxy S25 series, Galaxy Z Fold6, Galaxy Z Flip6, and newer phones come with Google Messages as the default app. In the United States, Samsung started replacing its own app with Google Messages as early as the Galaxy S22 lineup.
This gradual shift highlights Samsung’s focus on streamlining its user experience. By relying more on Google Messages, the company is reducing duplication and simplifying communication across its devices. Ultimately, users are expected to transition smoothly as the older app phases out.
