Samsung has introduced the ISOCELL HP5, a new 200 MP smartphone camera sensor that the company says is the world’s first to feature 0.5 µm-sized pixels. Despite the tiny pixel size, Samsung claims the HP5 delivers brighter low-light photos and overall improved image clarity. The sensor itself measures 1/1.56 inches in size.
The company explains that the HP5 uses advanced imaging technologies such as Front Deep Trench Isolation (FDTI) and Dual Vertical Transfer Gate (D-VTG) to help each pixel capture more light and detail. The company also mentioned that its upgraded DTI Center Cut (DCC) technology enables the sensor to produce sharper and brighter results, even with smaller pixels.
Samsung further claims that the ISOCELL HP5 achieves a 150% increase in conversion gain and reduces random noise by 3% to 40%, depending on lighting conditions. The sensor supports 2x in-sensor zoom and can reach up to 6x lossless zoom when paired with a 3x telephoto lens.
The HP5 includes Smart ISO Pro and staggered HDR support for enhanced dynamic range. Video capabilities are equally strong, offering 4K recording at 120 fps, 8K at 30 fps, and 1080p at 240 fps. Additionally, it supports 8-bit, 10-bit, 12-bit, and 14-bit RAW formats for professional-grade flexibility.
Currently in mass production, the ISOCELL HP5 is expected to appear in several upcoming smartphones. With its compact design and powerful imaging features, Samsung aims to push mobile photography further into the professional territory.
