Satellite Internet Connectivity in Pakistan Could Become Operational Soon

Published by

Pakistan is moving closer to opening its satellite internet market as the Telecommunication Authority finalizes a key licensing framework. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has completed its draft rules for Fixed Satellite Services (FSS) after extensive consultations with industry players.

The finalized framework has now been sent to the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication, which will forward it to the Federal Cabinet for approval. Cabinet clearance is essential before satellite internet providers can formally apply for operational licenses in Pakistan. Analysts say approval could accelerate satellite broadband deployment, particularly in remote and underserved regions.

The framework is designed to simplify regulatory processes and attract both local and international satellite operators. It allows companies to establish gateway earth stations and offer broadband, backhaul, and enterprise connectivity services across the country. Licenses under this regime will be non-exclusive and valid for 15 years, providing long-term certainty for investors.

Satellite internet expansion in Pakistan has faced repeated delays due to overlapping regulatory approvals, security concerns, and data compliance issues. Multiple government agencies are involved, slowing down the entry of new providers. The Pakistan Space Activities Regulatory Board (PSARB) has completed consultations on the broader space-sector regulations, but formal licensing and coordination rules are still being finalized. Companies must first register with PSARB before applying for PTA licenses.

Industry experts believe the new FSS framework could mark a turning point for satellite broadband in Pakistan. Once regulatory hurdles are cleared, high-speed internet could finally reach areas long left behind by traditional networks, boosting connectivity and digital growth nationwide.
