Toyota Set to Launch Third-Gen Hydrogen System for Cars and Trucks

Toyota is gearing up to showcase its third-generation fuel cell system at the International Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Expo in Tokyo on February 19, 2025. This latest advancement promises improved durability, greater efficiency, and reduced costs, marking a significant step forward in hydrogen technology.
Following its debut, Toyota plans to introduce the upgraded system in key markets, including Japan, Europe, North America, and China. The company aims to expand hydrogen-powered mobility across various regions, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable transportation.
Enhanced Performance and Cost Efficiency
According to Toyota, the new fuel cell system boasts double the lifespan of its predecessor, offering durability on par with diesel engines. Additionally, fuel efficiency has improved by 20%, resulting in an extended driving range. Innovations in cell design and production processes have also led to significant cost reductions, making hydrogen-powered vehicles more viable for widespread adoption.
Designed for more than just passenger cars, Toyota’s new fuel cell system can also power commercial vehicles, ships, trains, and stationary generators. Since launching the Mirai fuel cell electric vehicle in 2014, the company has sold approximately 28,000 units globally and has supplied over 2,700 fuel cell systems for buses and generators.
Despite Toyota’s long-standing efforts to popularize hydrogen fuel cell technology, widespread adoption has been hindered by high hydrogen fuel costs, storage limitations, and limited infrastructure. While Toyota claims to have addressed these challenges, the real-world impact of these advancements remains to be seen.
With the unveiling of its third-generation system, Toyota is betting on a future where hydrogen-powered transportation becomes a mainstream reality. Whether this latest breakthrough will accelerate adoption or face the same roadblocks as before will be closely watched by the industry.
