Ubisoft has officially cancelled the long-awaited Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake. Jason Schreier reported the cancellation today, confirming the end of the project’s tumultuous development cycle. Alongside this major title, Ubisoft also axed five other games. These include four unannounced console/PC projects and one mobile game.
The bad news continues for fans. Schreier reports that Ubisoft is delaying seven additional games. While Ubisoft did not name specific titles, evidence suggests the highly anticipated Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag remake is among them.
Fans previously hoped for a “shadow drop” of the Prince of Persia remake or a Black Flag reveal this month. Unfortunately, these rumours were incorrect. Instead, the company is undergoing a “larger restructuring”.
Quality concerns drove the decision. Reports indicate Ubisoft was “not happy with the state of the game”. The company originally announced the remake in 2020. However, negative fan reaction to early footage forced delays. Ubisoft attempted to align the project with fan expectations, but those efforts ultimately failed.
The cancellation strikes a heavy blow to the franchise. The series saw a brief revival recently with Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown in 2024 and The Rogue Prince of Persia in 2025. Although critics praised both titles, The Lost Crown was a commercial disappointment. Similarly, the sales performance of the 2025 roguelike remains unclear.
Consequently, the brand appears weaker than before. With the Sands of Time remake dead, fans should not expect new entries anytime soon. Additionally, the status of other long-delayed titles, such as Beyond Good & Evil 2, remains unconfirmed despite the restructuring news.
