Ufone-Telenor Merger Unresolved, PTA Chairman Updates NA Committee

ISLAMABAD: PTA Chairman Major General (Retd) Hafeez ur Rehman informed the committee that Ufone and Telenor have not yet merged. He further clarified that the PTA has not received any official confirmation regarding the merger of the two companies.
He emphasized the need to establish more towers to improve the quality of service across the country. Additionally, he mentioned that several factors should be considered during the spectrum auction process.
Addressing the committee, Major General Rehman highlighted the pressing need to expand Pakistan’s telecom infrastructure, especially by increasing the number of towers to improve service quality across the country. This move, he stressed, is crucial for meeting growing demands and ensuring consumers benefit from better connectivity.
The committee also took the opportunity to review the plans for the upcoming 5G spectrum auction. Minister of State for IT and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, emphasized the importance of balancing revenue generation with the necessary infrastructure development during the auction process. However, the timeline for the auction remains uncertain due to several pending legal cases related to the spectrum, which continue to block progress.
