WhatsApp is rolling out Restricted Chats to Android beta testers, adding controls over individual conversations beyond existing encryption protections. The feature addresses vulnerabilities where third-party tools and AI agents accessed messages through linked devices without user awareness.
Help Net Security first reported the feature in September 2026, noting WhatsApp’s specific concern: “Some people pair their accounts with modified web clients that can read their conversations” and forward them to AI systems without consent. Restricted Chats directly addresses this attack vector by preventing conversation access through WhatsApp Web, secondary phones, and linked devices entirely.
When enabled through the chat info screen, Restricted Chats applies four limitations to individual conversations. Media received in restricted chats no longer automatically saves to the device gallery, giving users control over what appears in their camera roll. Conversation exports become disabled, preventing users from downloading message histories for external processing or archiving. Meta AI features stop working within restricted chats, removing one pathway that AI agents previously used to analyze conversation content. The feature also prevents access through WhatsApp Web and secondary devices, closing the vulnerability that concerned WhatsApp engineers.
The current Android beta rollout reaches version 2.26.39.11, distributed through Google Play Store. WABetaInfo noted that “not every beta tester will see it immediately,” suggesting phased deployment typical of WhatsApp’s testing approach. The feature currently remains unavailable for group chats, limiting initial utility for team communications and shared conversations common in professional and social settings.
The rollout timeline for general availability remains unannounced. Beta testers noted the feature was “not switched on” during the September announcement window. However, the current beta rollout suggests WhatsApp continues refining implementation before public release. Linked device restrictions and export controls likely require additional testing across network conditions and device types.
This privacy upgrade sets WhatsApp apart from competitors still developing similar controls. Signal and Telegram offer message encryption by default but lack WhatsApp’s per-conversation restrictions. Restricted Chats reflects WhatsApp acknowledging that encryption alone does not protect against threats from compromised linked devices and unauthorized AI processing.
