The federal government has issued a notification regarding the observance of Youm-e-Istehsaal on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, but it has not announced a public holiday for the occasion.
According to a notification issued by the Cabinet Division, a one-minute silence will be observed across Pakistan at 9:00 a.m. on August 5 to express solidarity with the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
The directive, issued on the instructions of the Prime Minister, calls for nationwide participation in the observance and instructs the Press Information Department to give the announcement wide publicity through print and electronic media.
However, there is no confirmation yet of an official public holiday on August 5 anywhere in Pakistan. The Cabinet Division’s notification only announces the observance of a one-minute silence and does not mention the closure of government offices, educational institutions, or businesses.
This year’s Youm-e-Istehsaal comes at a significant time, with Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) currently holding local government elections in three phases. The election process has kept the region politically active, while authorities have also been dealing with recent unrest and protests in several cities, prompting heightened security measures ahead of the August 5 observance.
Although provincial governments may issue separate notifications if they decide to declare local holidays or special arrangements, no such announcement has been made so far. Citizens are therefore advised to continue following their normal schedules unless an official notification is issued by the relevant federal or provincial authorities.
Pakistan observes Youm-e-Istehsaal every year on August 5 to express solidarity with the people of Kashmir and to highlight the country’s diplomatic stance on the Kashmir dispute. This year, the nationwide one-minute silence at 9:00 a.m. will be the primary officially announced observance so far.
