Xbox just officially released a highly anticipated system update. After a month of Insider testing, the new Xbox Disc-to-Digital feature is finally rolling out globally. Consequently, all Xbox Series X and Xbox One owners can now convert their physical games into digital licenses.

How the Xbox Disc-to-Digital Feature Works
Microsoft initially announced this feature on August 26. Shortly after, the company pushed the experimental update to Xbox Insiders on August 31. Now, following a successful feedback phase, the final version is available to the masses. You just need to download the latest system update to get started.
Next, simply insert a physical disc into your console. Automatically, an on-screen notification will appear and unlock your digital license. From then on, you can play that game without ever needing to insert the disc again.
Sometimes, the automatic notification might fail to pop up. In that case, you can claim the license manually by following these simple steps:
- Hover over the game icon on your Xbox home screen.
- Press the ‘Start’ button on your controller.
- Select the ‘Claim digital license’ prompt.
License Revocation & DRM Rules
However, this convenient system includes strict rules regarding physical media sharing. Your digital license remains tied to the location of the physical disc. Therefore, if someone inserts your claimed disc into a different Xbox Series X or Xbox One, your console will instantly revoke the digital license. Consequently, you will lose your ability to play the game digitally.
Fortunately, Microsoft makes it easy to track your active licenses. You can easily check which games you have lost access to through the console’s settings. Simply navigate to the ‘Games & Apps’ area and view the ‘Revoked Digital Games’ section.
Publisher Support & Game Compatibility
Currently, publisher participation remains a mixed bag. Early in September, the feature brewed some controversy among testers. Some publishers initially opted out of the program altogether. Specifically, Ubisoft came under heavy fire when popular ‘Far Cry’ and ‘Assassin’s Creed’ titles lacked compatibility. Thankfully, this was just a simple case of bad timing. Ubisoft officially joined the Disc-to-Digital program just a few days later.
Additionally, SEGA recently confirmed its participation in the program. Conversely, major publishers like Bandai Namco and Square Enix remain notably absent.
Meanwhile, Microsoft has not yet released an official list of compatible Disc-to-Digital games. However, Xbox gamers can find an unofficial tracker via XCT.live. According to this site, 1,583 Xbox One and Xbox Series X games currently support the program. Because this feature is still in its infancy, fans can expect many more titles to join that list in the coming months.
