The Prime Minister of Pakistan has appointed Ali Jehangir Siddiqui as an honorary consul of the country for foreign investment.
The notification which was initiated from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sees Ali Jehangir Siddiqui appointed as the “Ambassador-at-Large for Foreign Investment in an honourary capacity,” effective from 13th of June, 2019. Ali Jehangir Siddiqui, who is the son of former banker Jehangir Siddiqui, had also earlier served as an ambassador of Pakistan to the United States.
For the uninitiated, Ambassador-at-Large is a special ambassador who is not appointed to a particular country. Rather, the individual usually tends to a dedicated portfolio and can represent its nation in several other countries as needed by that specific function.
As far as the professional expertise of the individual is concerned, Ali Siddiqui is an investment banking expert and holds a BA in Economics from Cornell University in the US. Ali is a serial entrepreneur and founded JS Bank back in 2006 by acquiring the American Express Bank’s offshoot in Pakistan. The individual has also worked as a Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of JS Private Equity.
Quite recently, Ali Siddiqui had joined the Advisory board at Afinity, the World’s largest AI startup along with the former British PM David Cameron and former US Vice Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral William Owens. David Cameron is working as the Chairman of this board.
The accomplished individual also harbors the experience of working in diplomatic positions. Ali was appointed as the Pakistani ambassador to the United States by the previous government. At that time, the appointment received a backlash from the then opposition. During his service at the US, Ali Siddiqui received a guard of honour at Pentagon, the headquarters of US Defense Department. Ali Siddiqui was later appointed as a Minister of State to the Prime Minister, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.
