Sindh Govt to Launch EV Taxi Service by February 2025 with Fares of 9 Rupees per KM
Karachi: The Sindh government is fast-tracking the introduction of an electric vehicle (EV) taxi service, with plans to deploy the first fleet of EV taxis by February 2025. This initiative is designed to offer residents an affordable and environmentally sustainable transportation option.
Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon and Provincial Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah convened a meeting to discuss the EV taxi system, with officials explaining its operating characteristics and benefits. Officials demonstrated that consumers could go 200 kilometers in a ride for 1800 rupees, which was more reasonable than private automobiles and traditional transport booking methods.
For context, , personal automobiles typically cost 20 rupees per kilometer, and EV taxi ride-hailing rates range between 35 and 40 rupees per kilometer. Riding an electric car taxi will cost approximately 9 rupees per kilometer.
Minister Memon emphasized that the EV taxi service would revolutionize Sindh’s transportation system by offering an eco-friendly and affordable alternative. He reiterated that the government must quickly implement this service to meet its aim of providing modern transportation options. This project will benefit young workers while also promoting environmental conservation and new business development, he added.
The government intends to establish a comprehensive EV system in Sindh, which would include charging stations and new financing options for electric vehicles. The organization will collaborate with banks to provide simple installment plans for unemployed young people who wish to purchase EV taxis, allowing more residents to become empowered and self-sufficient.
The government is also focusing on the timely completion of necessary infrastructure, including the establishment of EV charging stations, to support the successful rollout of the EV taxi service. This initiative reflects Sindh’s commitment to sustainable development and the promotion of green technologies in the transportation sector.
